Now Gotham's Undercover Superhero Batman has disappeared leaving behind a daughter from his long-time love Catwoman. Her name is Helena the mysterious superhero known"The Huntress". She has teamed up with the paralyzed hero "Batgirl" together they meet up with their next teammate Dinah Lance. Dinah is a telepath and psychic who had terrifying dreams about Batgirl's brutal accident. They must learn how to work together and become not only a team of superheroes but also a family.
Another reviewer put down Birds of Preynot being faithful to source material (DC Comics) while Smallville is. Come on…show me anywhere in the Superboy/Superman comics where Smallville is practically destroyed by a meteor shower bringing Kal-El (aka Clark Kent) to earth. Or a story in the comic books about humans getting super powers )and always going evil with them) from Kryptonite (called green meteorite rock in the first season or two).<br/><br/>My point is, it's not necessarily following source material that makes or breaks either show. Smallville (which survived the cut) is about teenager Clark coming to terms with his superpowers and trying to be a normal teenager. And it works.<br/><br/>Likewise Birds Of Prey was mainly about Huntress (aka Helena) who was also struggling with growing up and trying to deal with a loving mother violently taken from her at an early age and a father she never knew and resents but whose shoes she is now called on to fill. I thought the show was great and was very disappointed that it wasn't given at least the chance of a few seasons to make a go and gain a loyal following,Smallville has. I liked Birds of Prey from the start. I didn't like Smallville from the start, but it grew on me. Why? Because I forgot about how it butchers the Superboy myth and just enjoyed it for what's there. Birds of Prey, with it's excellent cast (particulary Ashley Scott who created a superbly three dimensional character in Huntress). My only complaint was never getting to see "HarlyQuinn" in costume. And the episode where they had to make Oracle walk to defeat an old foe. You don't have to be able-bodied to be a hero(ine).<br/><br/>It's probably too late, but come on WB. Bring back what was one of your better shows. (Much better than some of the ridiculously stupid comedies that lasted three seasons or more).
This show reminds me a little too much of Dark Angel. Normally that wouldn't be too bad, seeinghow Dark Angel was an awesome show and all, but 'Birds of Prey' doesn't do a very good job of imitating, or standing on it's own. I know it's supposed to be a continuation of the whole Batman mythology, but does anyone, remember it saying anywhere the Batman and Catwoman had a kid? I know that the show is supposed to be 'what-if' situation, but don't you think that good, kind hearted Bruce Wayne would do the right thing and help to raise his own child?!?! All in all, I didn't like it much, but, if it works REALLY hard, it could have some potential.

BOP is best appreciatedan "Elseworlds" story; it exists in a continuity all its own – apart from the comics, films, etc. (i.e., in this continuity, Joker is alive.)<br/><br/>The show draws from several sources: the comics, the films, and "Batman: The Animated Series" (cf., Harley Quinn and the voice of Mark Hamillthe Joker.) Judging from the costume that is featured in the opening credits, we're assuming that the producers are basing their Catwoman upon the one featured in the 1992 film, "Batman Returns" (In the movie, Selina Kyle absorbs the essences of the cats – nine lives, ability to always land on one's feet, etc. – which revive her after Shreck pushes her off the building.) "Birds of Prey" is not about either Batman or Batgirl. The show is about Huntress, Dinah, and Oracle (who used to be Batgirl.) The title of the show – "Birds of Prey" – pretty much says it all.<br/><br/>It is stated in the show that Batman disappeared after the Joker killed Selina. Bruce Wayne left the city and is in an unknown location, but he is still alive. In the comics, that was what led Helena Wayne to become the Huntress. In more recent years, however, the Huntress character was revampeda different person altogther, and has no family ties to either Batman or Catwoman. Blame the network for that one. According to executive producer Hans Tobeason, WB had "issues" with Oracle and her chair (what's more, they tried to freeze her out of the show altogether by limiting her screentime.)
