a5c7b9f00b In 1942, during the World War II, the Canadian spy Max Vatan goes parachuting to the French Morocco to meet the French spy Marianne Beauséjour that is posing of his wife in Casablanca. Their mission is to assassinate the German Ambassador in a reception. They live together for a couple of days and soon they fall in love with each other. When Max returns to his base in London, he brings Marianne and marries her. One year later, they have the baby daughter Anna during a bombing. One day, Max is summoned for a meeting in the feared V Section with his commander officer Frank Heslop and a secret service agent that tells that they suspect Marianne is a German Spy. In the middle of World War II, in turbulent 1942, the fearless Wing Commander, Max Vatan, lands on the desert dunes of Morocco to meet with the skilful Parisian member of the French Resistance, Marianne Beauséjour. After a suicide mission in the heart of Casablanca, Max and Marianne will flee to England with plans on making a family; however, heavy clouds of distrust and suspicion will burden their relationship, when Max receives a shocking call from the Secret Service Division. In disbelief, with a terrible task in his hands and crushed under a devastating dilemma, Max must find the courage to seek for answers in the perilous streets of a bombarded London, regardless of the outcome. In the end, amid duty and love, who shall live and who shall die?
There was no plot twist although there were several places for a plot twist. If you saw the trailer, you saw the movie. Also, the break from the period setting to give modern values with no point. The introduction of a sister to Brad Pitt's character, who is openly a lesbian. This would NEVER happen in the 1940shomosexuality was against the law and they were greatly disdained by the public. It is a completely pointless distraction from the period setting. Another goof, German Army officers wearing Nazi armbands. I was beginning to think Quinton Tarantino made this movie. Another example of how Hollywood cannot make a period movie without sabotaging their own production.
Marion Cotillard is at the center of the storm, and she gives a very commanding and puzzling performance. She's mysterious, dangerous, and showing how she's fully capable of creating a enticing web of appeal and possible deceit, or isn't she? She's excellent in "Allied", but I would dare say Pitt steals the show by trying to keep up with her character's doings and Cotillard's fine acting. He's challenged and delivers.

Pitt plays Max, a Canadian air force spy who is sent on a mission to Morocco to eliminate a target. Along the way, she teams up with Monica (Cotillard) and eventually become the perfect team both professionally and in their civilian life. Everything seems to be working until the day a blip shows up in the intelligence of the RAF and things begin to unravel when Max must find out what is really happening with his wife.

Pitt and Cotillard have a different type of chemistry on screen. They're intellectual. She's not Sharon Stone, but she's feminine and classy, enticing with enough of a mystery to keep everyone guessing. She's a prize. Pitt is a more simple individual, but that makes him more dangerous and vulnerable at the same time because he's unable to see gray areas, which might be his undoing. She sees herinnocent and tries his best to clear her name. It's her nature and the aura of mystery that causes him sink into despair because it's just not possible that someone that lovely can be so dark.

Cotillard takes us and bewitches us from the beginning. She's playing a darker version of the alluring and romantic Elsa in "Casablanca". There are many tributes in this film to that classic. When you see the costumes and the settings you will notice what's happening, but Cotillard is more earthly, and we tend to suspect her from the beginning. Elsa was a romantic, a more dangerous type. Cotillard is too normal, and we don't know what to think. She's also too smart for us to dare cross her, and Max knows that, too.

It the end, it all comes together logically, giving us a satisfying conclusion. The parallels to "Casablanca" continue, except that's also where events really differ. "Allied" is a good combination of exotic settings, interesting characters, and old-fashioned action with a couple of moments when we realize that it's not all about a simple love story, but that there's some relevance to the setting and the period.

Go and enjoy.
A World War II romance-thriller that starts off smartly but sputters to an underwhelming finale.
